About optical fiber lighting
What is Fiber Optic Cable?
Fiber optic cable is composed of several individual strands of PMMA acrylic fibers
(also referred to as plastic fiber optic cable) covered by a clear PVC coating.
Why use fiber optic cable?
Fiber optic cable is an excellent alternative to neon and other traditional lighting products.
Fiber optic cable has no electricity in the cable itself. By using a color changing wheel in the
illuminator the cable will change color. The cable emits no heat making it ideal where
there are heat and electricity concerns such as wine racks, display cases, and in or around water.
Fiber optic is very energy efficient compared to neon.
Where can I use fiber optic cable?
Just about anywhere you like because there is very little heat and no electricity in the cable.
The outer jacket of the cable has UV inhibitors, algaecides, and fungicides to further protect it in
its environment.
When do I use fiber optic cable?
When you require a safe and energy efficient lighting system that has the ability to change
color and is able to fit in areas where traditional lighting systems can not fit. It can be used
for signs, building outlines, cove lighting, swimming pool perimeters, underwater lighting,
landscape lighting and to illuminate architectural fixtures.
Who uses fiber optic cable?
The Pepsi Globe in Caracas, Venezuela uses over seven kilometers of the side glow cable.
Major theme parks, corporations, sign companies, and home owners who illuminate
their homes all use fiber optic lighting. Once you discover the magical world of fiber optics,
you will begin to see it everywhere.
What is side glow cable?
Side Glow cable is a side (light) emitting cable composed of several individual strands
of acrylic fibers (also referred to as plastic fiber optic cable) covered by a clear PVC coating.
Side Glow cable is available in a range of diameters and in several models. The fiber strands
inside the cable are twisted around a reflective center core. Side glow cable is a safe
alternative to neon and has the ability to change colors.
What is end glow cable?
End glow cable is an end (light) emitting cable that uses the same acrylic fibers as side glow
except its fibers are covered in an opaque black or white PVC jacket.
What is an Illuminator?
An illuminator is often referred to as the light engine, light pump, light source and even transformer.
The illuminator houses the lamp that provides the light for the fiber optic cable.
The fiber is connected to the illuminator via a fiber head. On some models a color
wheel with many different color wheels or filters is positioned between the light and the cable.
The color wheel is connected to a motor that will turn and change color at a predetermined rate.
For special effects a DMX system can be intergrated with some of the illuminators to provide fast
paced effects as well as dowsing. Dowsing is the stopping of light transmission through an
opaque filter.
If you have more than one illuminator can the colors change at the same time?
Yes, you will need a synchronous controller that can synchronize up to 35 illuminators.
How far does light emit on the cable?
Typically 100 feet loops of fiber with the beginning and the end of the fiber terminating
at the illuminator.
