DMX512–Digital Multiplex
DMX512, released in 1986, was created by the entertainment industry to control 512
channels of lighting fxtures per cable at near-video rates. Since then DMX has been
used in the majority of lighting fxtures and, due to its qual ities in fading RGB devices,
has also migrated into architectural fxtures.

GENERAL INFORMATION
DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH is a constant currnet LED driver with multiple LED outputs that are
control led over three and four channels. It is targeted at larger networked and smal ler
standalone instal lations that require dimmable, low-power ful l-colour static or dynamic
LED l ighting. DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH is DMX compatible.Each channel can control up to
350mA/500mA/700mA @ 12-48V (suppl ied by external power supply) Dimming is
performed with a 500Hz PWM signal, and 8 bit resolution.

RDM Capabilities:
The Remote Device Management (RDM) protocol permits intel l igent bidirectional
communication between a DMX512 master and a DMX512 slave. RDM enables DMX
device discovery (when connected to the DMX transmission l ine) plus management
and control of the DMX device. Examples of RDM messages (control packets) are:
change (set) DMX start address, get DMX device state info , etc.

Appendix: ENTTEC RDM packet sniffer
The ENTTEC RDM USB PRO has been used to check whether the RDM messages
generated by the DMX512 Master and Slave boards could be recognized as val id RDM
messages. The screen shots of discovery searches of different network setups with RDM
enabled DMX512 Slaves are shown in Fig. This screenshots show the correctness of
the captured RDM messages.

DMX Addressing:
•The DIP switch al lows the DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH to be addressed via a
DMX control interconnection.
•The address required is set via the addressing switches on the side of the
DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH.

• The most common address is 1, which is shown here.
•To set the Driver to another address, set the combination of switches that add down to
the address required.
•For example:
DMX 11 is 8 + 2 +1 = 11

DMX Installations:
To connect the DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH to a DMX mixing desk or DMX control ler, plug the
DMX input cable in to socket DMX1.
The DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH uses an RJ45 and XLR-3 socket, for connections with XLR
see diagram DMX/RJ45 Connections.
To connect to another DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH use an RJ45 patch cord, plug one end into
DMX2 socket and the other into DMX1 on the next DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH. In this way, up
to 32 DMXR-CC-3CH / 4CH can be chained together.
